This policy explains what data War Trails North processes, why, and on what basis. The service is designed so that as little personal data as possible is created.

Your location never leaves your device
When you use Show near me, the browser asks your permission for location. The coordinate is handled in the browser: the nearest sites are calculated on your device, and the location is not sent to the server, stored, or linked to you.
Usage statistics record only that a nearby search happened and how many sites fell within the radius — not where you were.
Usage statistics
The service uses Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights to measure page views, usage events and page performance. The measurement is cookieless and does not identify individuals or track them across sites.
The data collected includes the page opened, the referring source, a coarse country, device type and browser, together with the service's own events: opening the map, opening a site, using a filter, searching, and the nearby search. Search terms are not stored.
The basis for processing is legitimate interest (GDPR 6(1)(f)): monitoring that the service works and is usable. You can block the measurement with your browser's tracking protection.
Cookies
The service sets no cookies and uses no browser storage for tracking. There is therefore no cookie banner.
Third-party services
The base map is loaded from OpenFreeMap and photographs from their original archives (WarSampo, Wikimedia, Finna) directly to your browser. Those servers see your IP address in order to establish the connection, as with any web content.
The service runs on Vercel and its content is stored in a Neon database within the European Union.
Retention and your rights
Usage statistics are kept in aggregate form and cannot identify an individual user. The service has no sign-up and stores no user accounts.
You have the right to information about the processing, to request correction or erasure of your data, and to lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Ombudsman. Because the service stores nothing that can be linked to you, an individual erasure request has nothing to act on in practice.
Data on the fallen
The service uses the National Archives' casualty records only as aggregate counts by place. The names of the fallen are not shown anywhere and are not stored in the service's database. Places with fewer than five recorded casualties are excluded entirely so that no individual can be identified.
